Notore Chemical Industries established a world-class nitrogenous fertilizer business near Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Teranga Gold Corporation is a gold company created from the spinoff of Mineral Deposits Limited’s (MDL) gold business in 2010. The Fund had invested in MDL in 2007. The Company owns and operates the Sabodala gold mine and processing facility.  The processing facility is the only mill in Senegal. In 2013, the Company also acquired Oromin Exploration, which owns an interest in additional resources near the Company’s Sabodala mill and related infrastructure, and has a significant exploration land in Senegal and the region.  The Company’s goal is to set the benchmark for responsible mining in Senegal and leverage its existing infrastructure and become a mid-tier gold producer with 250,000 to 350,000 ounces in the medium term.

Teranga means hospitality and friendliness in Wolof, the main local language of Senegal. The Company wanted a name that would reflect its actions.

Mineral Deposits Limited (MDL) is an Australian based mining company focused on finding, mining, and processing mineral sands resources.  At the time of the Fund’s investment in 2007, MDL was developing both the Sabodala Gold Mining Project and the Grande Cote Mineral Sands Project (GCZP) in Senegal.  Following the spinoff of its gold business, MDL is now exclusively focused in mineral sands, owning 50% of TiZir Limited, which it formed in partnership with French mining group Erament in 2011.  The TiZir assets include the $500 million GCZP and an ilmenite upgrading facility in Tyssedal, Norway. GCZP is a world class mineral sands orebody that extends for over 100 kilometres.  GCZP is expected to produce approximately 85,000 tons of zircon and 575,000 tons of ilmenite when in full production, representing about 7% of both global zircon and titanium feedstock supply. Tyssedal will serve as an offtake for the GCZP ilmenite production.  Tyssedal smelts ilmenite to produce about 200,000 tons per year of high quality titanium slag which is sold to pigment producers and 110,000 tons per year of high purity pig iron sold to ductile iron foundries.

At the time of Fund’s investment in 2007, the Company was a first mover in Tanzania having developed the Mnazi Bay gas field, associated gas processing facilities, developing and constructing the 18MW Mtwara power plant utilizing Mnazi Bay gas and assisting TANESCO in the operation and development of the electricity distribution and transmission network in the region. The Company is focused on developing and monetizing its substantial existing gas resources in Tanzania, where the Company has one producing and three shut-in wells in Mnazi Bay field. Gas production is expected to ramp-up significantly once the new gas pipeline connecting the field to the key market in Dar es Salaam is complete. The Company is also exploring for and developing new oil and gas resources alongside strong technical partners Anadarko and Maurel & Prom in both Mozambique and Tanzania adding value to its exploration acreage through 2D and 3D seismic, exploration drilling and other exploration activity.
